Yuletide in Transylvania
Christmas Markets
Mulled wine, fried sausages and sweets from all over Europe take centre stage as Brașov's town square is transformed to play host to the German tradition of Christmas markets.
A place for locals and visitors to gather and enjoy all sorts of food, Brașov's young and old alike gather to taste the various treats from both local cuisine and the surrounding European influences.
Christmas markets are an ancient tradition, tracing back to the 14th century in Germany, Austria, Northan Italy and France. In recent years however the celebration has extended far beyond its traditional homelands, and Brașov puts on a compelling show. Although smaller than the event in Romania's capital city Bucharest, Brașov's version of the Christmas markets are just as charming and a little more laid-back.
Getting there
The town square in the centre of Brașov is transformed by hundreds and hundreds of lights- there's simply no missing it. At nightfall, you'll find Romanians of all ages heading towards the markets, just tag along!
